Understanding Allergic Conjunctivitis: What It Is and How We Can Help

July 3, 2025  ·  Dr. Brandon Harnos, O.D.

If your eyes tend to get red, itchy, and watery during certain times of the year — or even year-round — you might be dealing with allergic conjunctivitis. This common condition occurs when allergens like pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold irritate the conjunctiva, the thin membrane covering the white part of your eyes and the inside of your eyelids. Unlike bacterial or viral conjunctivitis ("pink eye"), allergic conjunctivitis isn't contagious — but it can be just as uncomfortable and disruptive to daily life.

Treatment options vary depending on the severity and frequency of your symptoms. For many patients, over-the-counter antihistamine eye drops or oral allergy medications provide adequate relief. In more persistent cases, prescription-strength drops that combine antihistamines with mast cell stabilizers can be highly effective. Avoiding known allergens, using cold compresses, and keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons are also useful strategies — particularly relevant here in the Hudson Valley, where seasonal allergen counts can be significant.
