The 4th of July is a time for celebration — barbecues, parades, and of course, fireworks lighting up the night sky. But while fireworks are a dazzling tradition, they also come with serious risks, especially to your eyes. Every year, thousands of people end up in emergency rooms due to firework-related injuries, and a significant number of those involve eye trauma.
The Hidden Dangers of Fireworks
Fireworks can explode at temperatures over 2,000°F — hot enough to cause permanent eye damage. Common injuries include corneal abrasions, burns to the eyelids and eyes, retinal detachment, and in severe cases, ruptured eyeballs. Even sparklers, often handed to children, burn at around 1,200°F — hotter than a blowtorch.
Eye Safety Tips
- ◆Attend professional public displays rather than handling your own fireworks
- ◆Wear polycarbonate safety goggles if you're around any fireworks — regular glasses won't protect you
- ◆Keep spectators at least 500 feet from the launch area
- ◆Never let children handle fireworks — even sparklers require adult supervision
- ◆Never relight a dud — wait 20 minutes, then soak it in water before disposal
If an Eye Injury Occurs
Do not rub the eye, do not apply pressure, and do not attempt to remove any embedded object. Seek emergency medical attention immediately — time is critical with eye injuries.
